History of the Anthem
""O Canada", the national anthem of Canada, was originally penned and performed in 1880 in French, known as "Chant National". It was originally written as a Canadian anthem for the national holiday of Québec (June 24 - St. Jean Baptiste Day) but, as the years moved on, the tune was given english lyrics and eventually usurped "God Save the King" and "The Maple Leaf Forever" as the unofficial national anthem from coast to coast to coast.
The first widely-known English version was penned in 1908 by Montréal lawyer, Robert Stanley Weir, to mark the 300th anniversary of Québec City that year. This would later form the backbone of "O Canada", whose english lyrics would change a few more times in 1913, 1914, 1916, and recently to the present official lyrics in 2018.
While O Canada has been used as Canada's de facto anthem since 1939, it was made the official national anthem on July 1, 1980, which, coincidentally, was the first time July 1 was no longer known as "Dominion Day" but, rather, "Canada Day"."
